Excavation and Base Preparation

Proper base preparation is the single most critical factor determining paver installation longevity, requiring excavation to appropriate depths, compaction of subgrade soils, installation of geotextile fabric, and placement of crushed aggregate in compacted layers. Shortcuts here guarantee premature failure.

Excavation depth depends on application type and soil conditions. Pedestrian areas typically require removal of 7-9 inches of soil to accommodate 4-6 inches of gravel base, 1 inch of bedding sand, and paver thickness. Vehicular areas need deeper excavation for 8-12 inch base depths. Poor soil conditions may require additional depth.

Sand Bedding and Paver Installation

Bedding sand creates a 1-inch setting layer that cushions pavers and allows final leveling adjustments, screeded to precise tolerances using guide rails that ensure uniform depth across the entire installation area. This layer must be perfectly prepared but not compacted before paver placement.

We install 1-inch diameter metal conduit pipes as screed guides across the prepared base. Concrete sand spread between guides gets leveled by dragging a straight board along the pipes, creating a perfectly smooth, consistent sand bed. We remove guides and carefully fill the voids before laying pavers.

Edge Restraint and Joint Sand

Edge restraints secure perimeter pavers against lateral movement and prevent spreading that would compromise the interlocking system, while polymeric joint sand fills gaps between pavers and hardens to lock units together and inhibit weed growth. Both elements are essential for lasting installations.

Plastic paver edging provides effective, economical edge restraint for most applications. We install edging tight against perimeter pavers and secure it with 10-inch spikes driven into the compacted base. For curved edges, flexible edging conforms to radius requirements. Heavier applications may use concrete edge restraints.

Final Inspection and Care Instructions

Every completed installation receives thorough inspection verifying proper drainage, consistent joint filling, secure edges, and surface uniformity before we review care instructions and maintenance recommendations with property owners. Our work isn’t complete until you’re completely satisfied.
